Detox is a buzz word right now. Celebrities, athletes, you name it, someone is talking about detox at this very moment. But is detox right for you? Cleansing the body of toxins can help with energy and fighting of disease but it should be done with caution and under supervision. Before you decide to follow a detox program decide which type will suit you best. There are many forms of detox including sugar detox, liver cleansing, body wraps, colon cleanse or master cleanse.
Store Bought Detox
There are many chemical or supplement detox programs on the market but be careful with what you get but there are no government regulations on what is sold in the health food market and very few tests or trials have been done on these types of products. Before trying any of these programs ask around, do your research and consult your physician.
Natural Detox
Natural detox programs are the more healthy and safe option to cleanse the body. Natural programs involved cutting out processed food and junk food to prevent the entry of toxins into the system before the cleanse. Cleansing can be done a number of ways so find the one that’s right for you. If you are not prepared to fast or cut food out of your diet then focus on a diet of vegetables, fruit and herbs to eliminate toxins from the body. Remember to drink lots of water to flush out the body and green tea for its antioxidants. Try a raw food diet. It’s a great way to cleanse but you won’t be starving yourself.
Other natural programs are juice diets or water diets. These types of cleanses should not be done for more than two days. This form of fasting will rid the body of toxins quickly and should be done with caution. All detox programs will have some side effects but they will be more noticeable during a fasting detox. You may suffer from headaches and lack of energy. This may also result in moodiness. For a successful detox you may need to take time off work or make sure there are no important deadlines or events during the detox period. You will also want to ensure that you can get enough sleep during the detox.
If dietary detox programs aren’t right for you that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from cleansing the body of toxins. External detox can be done with skin brushing, lymphatic drainage massage and saunas. No matter what detox you decide to follow stay healthy in between by eating well and drinking a glass of lukewarm water with fresh lemon in it every morning. This will help cleanse the liver and keep your skin and hair looking healthy.
